Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra: Mahler’s Epic First Symphony
Fairfield Concert HallStoneleigh Youth Orchestra returns to Fairfield Halls to perform Mahler’s epic First Symphony. Drawing on the music and folk tales of his childhood in Austria, Mahler’s music takes us on a journey from youthful awakening to love, loss and despair before finally finding redemption in a blaze of glory.
Also on the programme is Arutiunian’s virtuosic folk-inspired Trumpet Concerto, for which we are delighted to welcome Imogen Whitehead as soloist.
The concert opens with Lily Boulanger’s fresh and optimistic D’un Matin de Printemps, written in the last two months of her tragically short life.
Our Training Orchestra will also be taking part in the concert playing 4 short pieces, including a selection from Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1
Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra is one of the UK’s leading youth orchestras. Based in Wimbledon, it is made up of two full sized orchestras of over 160 players drawn from across south-west London and Surrey. It rehearses weekly during term time and gives three concerts a year.
